  • The suicide of actor Dasun Nishan

The untimely death of actor Dasun Nishan was something that went viral on social media in Sri Lanka this last week. The actor, according to sources, had committed suicide in his apartment and was found dead. The reasons behind his actions were a bit obscure although many rumours of a love affair gone awry were circulating.

  • Protests against Myanmar refugees

The Myamnar Rohingya refugees in Sri Lanka faced a lot of tension with the protests of the hardline Buddhist community taking off across the island. The topic is something that has caused a lot of stir and controversy on social media in the last week. The Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe seems to have come under pressure by these protests and declared that he would not grant refuge to the Rohingya Muslims coming in. However Jehan Perera, the Director of the National Peace Council had stressed on the fact that the government should grant them temporary asylum based on humanitarian reasons.

  • 7 suspects receive death penalty for Vidya murder

The vicious rape and murder of Vidya in Jaffna is one that has been circulating on social media for a long period of time whilst the trails were in proceedings. However, last week the court passed its judgement and ordered 7 suspects out of the 9 accused to be given the death penalty which was something that was appreciated by the majority of Sri Lankans, given the absolutely heartless and violent fate that the schoolgirl had to ensure at the hands of her killers.

  • ‘Husband-proof’ shopping list

Era Golwalkar took matters into her hands by writing down a meticulously detailed shopping list for her husband’s aid with each and every items drawn and described so that he would not get tricked by vendors trying to sell him substandard or spoilt produce. The shopping list that was posted on Twitter went viral last week.

 

  • German election 2017

Germany had its elections last week where even chancellor Angela Merkel had to show her identity before she was allowed to cast her vote. The fact that the law was applied in the same manner to everybody was appreciated by the masses according to the comments on the video that went viral while others stated that it was ‘weirdly offensive’ to have asked for her identification.

The SL Diaries Facebook page ranked among the top five fastest growing entertainment pages in Sri Lanka last week and they seem to have a good relationship with their YouTube channel as well which is a vantage point for a page that focuses on hot topics and entertainment.

The U.S Embassy in Sri Lanka’s Facebook page ranked among the top five fastest growing society Facebook pages in teh country even though they do not maintain a good relationship with their YouTube channel. It could be possible, that given the nature of their work and connections, they do not require to update their YouTube channel as frequently as other entities would.

  • Facebook Messenger Crashing Instantly On iOS 11; Crash Log References ‘CryptoTokenKit’

Last week, Facebook Messenger seemed to crash instantly for certain iPhone users. “CryptoTokenKit”, that may be present in the latest version of the software, could be blamed possibly for this. Usually, the updates for Facebook Messenger happen without an issue, even though this time, it seems to have to have run into an issue.
