Went Viral in Sri Lanka?

  • Extreme Weather in Sri Lanka

It looks it’s that time of the year again when the country gets flooded. This has become almost sort of a norm now for the past few years with heavy floods following monsoon rains almost annually. The extreme weather in this case had forced open the dam at Kukule Ganga that have caused significant risk of flooding to the residents at areas like Ingiriya, Agalawaththa, Bulathsinhala and he likes. With over 9.3k views, this was just one of the videos that went viral last week with regards to the extreme weather conditions affecting Sri Lanka.

  • Sarath Fonseka’s statement on Alle Gunawansa thero

Sarath Fonseka, the former Chief of Army is a personality that has always been shrouded in a bit of controversy. This has only been highlighted more, with his recent statement about the Alle Gunawansa Thero where he stated that the priest has lost his mind to the anger and disapproval of many, as can be seen clearly by the comments on the video that went viral on the Facebook page of Tharuna Aruna.

  • Lalith Weerathunga found guilty of corruption

The Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge and the TRC Director General Anusha Palpita were found guilty last week, of “misappropriating” LKR 600 million worth of funds in a Sil clothes case. They were both sentenced to three years of imprisonment with rigorous labour by the Colombo High Court. The High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga stated that both of the prosecutors have been proven guilty beyond any reasonable doubt. The views of Minister Bandula Gunawardene and others who stand by the accused and state that he is innocent were ridiculed and severely criticized by viewers when this video on Ada Derana’s Facebook page went viral.

This Week’s International Hubbub

  • Earthquake devastates Mexico

Mexico and especially the state of Oaxaca, was hit by a 8.1 magnitude earthquake that now has left over 61 dead and many missing, presumably buried beneath rubble. Hundreds of others are homeless and in a state of panic after this giant of an earthquake wracked through the country. With 355k views and counting, this video on Facebook went viral instantly and hopefully also brought in more aid to the disaster victims.

  • US Open Tennis Championships’ humour

With all of the natural disasters wreaking havoc on the US, it is good to look at some things in a light-hearted manner, which is exactly what happened when at the US OPen Tennis Championships, Rafa Nadai was asked what he thought of Roger Federer on the court and outside of it, to which he humorously replied “I don’t want to look like his boyfreind”. The video went viral on Facebook.

Things you should know

  • Facebook is testing features to help you make new friends

Facebook is constantly evolving and improving, trying to give users better ways of building connections on the social media network. As part of this, there is to be a new update rolled out that will allow users to analyze what common interests they share with a  person before becoming friends on the network. This will be achieved through giving users the chance to see various events both parties attended and the likes, rather than simply indicate mutual friends alone.
