What Went Viral in Sri Lanka?

  • Flooding in Sri Lanka brings out unlikely heroes

The severe flooding in Sri Lanka owing to the storm now passing close to the island, hundreds and thousands have been killed, deemed missing while entire villages have been displaced. Through the pandemonium, we also have been able to see the unity of a nation as those on safe grounds lent a generous hand for the benefit of those who are affected. In addition to the many aids sent out in form of essentials, unlikely heroes rushed to save the lives of many wading into turbulent and deep waters. The chief engineer at the Kukule Ganga Power Station found himself in a conundrum when the rainfall they received exceeded that of one month of rainfall normally. Caught between running for their lives and saving the property as well as saving the nation a huge loss, his FB post went viral with many offering their heartfelt respect for the valiant efforts of the team.

  • Melissa’s  interview after viral posts on social media.

Melissa is a Sri Lankan lawyer who gained a lot of attention on social media for her interest in fitness. The photographs published by her on her Facebook and Instagram accounts caused a lot of upheaval especially amongst other lawyers who decided that this sort of behaviour was inappropriate and disrespectful to the profession. In her latest interview, the brave young lawyer speaks of her choices whilst also saying that she forgives those who insulted or reprimanded her publicly. We think it should always be live and let live.

  • Government takes action to stop and prevent any religious extremist activities

During the cabinet discussions that were held recently, the government has decided to ensure that law enforcement is accurately carried out and that there will be no space for various religious or otherwise extremist groups to carry out their activities. The ministers spoke about the importance of maintaining law and order as well as peace. They maintained that the relevant law enforcement authorities will be given permission to take any and all action necessary to ensure that such unnecessary activities will no longer happen anywhere in the island.

  • Mangala Samaraweera and Ravi Karunanayake’s PDA

An image of Mangala Samaraweera planting a peck on Ravi Karunanayake went viral after their exchange of cabinet positions. Individuals such as D. Dayan Jayatilleke commented on the same and the public responded. Some spoke about the “incorrect” behaviour of Mangala Samaraweera while others bluntly asked Dr. Dayan if he was homophobic.

This Week’s International Hubbub

  • Explosion in the Manchester Arena at Ariana Grande concert

Perhaps the biggest trend in social media across the world last week was the explosion at the Ariana Grande concert held in Manchester Arena. With several dead and many injured the concert literally ended with a bang. With Ariana tweeting an emotional condolences and law enforcement making successful breakthroughs, the news still trends on social media.

A video of Melania Trump brushing the president’s hand away as he reached out to her has been the object of many memes, puns and jokes last week.

Stats of the Week

Etisalat maintains great PR on its Facebook page. However, their Youtube statistics aren’t the greatest. A good way of generating more Youtube views could be to cross promote on their rapidly growing Facebook page.

Shaa FM did rank as one of the fastest growing media Facebook pages in the island but interestingly, their network across Facebook and Youtube is not an impressive one. They need to remain more up to date on both fronts and perhaps look towards a campaign or two to increase their social media followers.

Shaa FM YouTube Channel statistics are as follows:

Total Subscribers -2,041

Total Videos -15
Total views -47,964
